Job Shadow:A Day with a Teacher
On August 20, 2016 I arrived to do my job shadow at Washington Elementary School. Originally I wasn’t sure if to job shadow a doctor or a teacher, but I decided to go with a teacher. I chose to go to a school for my job shadow because I’m interested in teaching. I had the experience of observing what a teacher routine is like when they teach elementary students. It’s a whole different story to see things in a different perspective like I did that day.
As I arrived I had the nerves ever since I stepped out of my house, I knew I would see some of the staff members from when I use to attend that school. This school is the one I attended to all my childhood so I knew most of staff members I’d see around, as I approached to open the front office door, there she was Amalia. One of the nicest ladies in that school, she then told me that Mrs.Efseaff was waiting for me in her room. I asked what classroom was she in and she said in the same one ever since I left that school, room 9. Teacher Efseaff during that day had the routine of teaching math first and then writing and she did that with two classes. Throughout the day I would watch how the students would ask and respond to the way she would teach them, and I would help students when they had questions I was able to answer. I have to admit her first class in the morning did great! They were all great listeners, and worked together very well, they didn’t give Efseaff a hard time listening. On the other hand Efseaffs’ second class wasn’t much similar they struggled much more on paying attention, and had a harder time working together and that’s how my day went.
What I learned with her first class is that she would group students together to make things easier for everyone. If one student had a question there was always someone in their table who knew the answer that way they didn’t have to ask the teacher, and it just made things easier for all of them. Not only that but day by day it gives them improvement in the way they work with others. Something I really liked is that in this school cellphones use during class wasn’t an issue because anyone who had a phone had to put it inside a box when they entered class, and once they left, at the end of class is when they would gran their phone. It’s a great way to be sure that cellphones won’t be an issue during class. Something I disliked is the way the second class disrespected their teacher. After a few times of being called out by the teacher for interrupting students kept their side conversations going and it’s a really irritating situations, my full respect to all the teachers that go through this, which is something that makes me think twice if I want to be a teacher.
Overall it was a great experience watching a teacher, and being one for a day. It still doesn’t change my idea of maybe becoming a Spanish teacher but not at an elementary school, but at a High school. It’s something that grabs my attention because I feel like I have the potential to be a teacher, and teach students what I know. I would really like to work with kids, and if it’s not through teaching at a school I still hope to in some other way.
