My Journey
I was born on September 2 of 1999. My name is Vanessa Mejia, I was born in the town of Visalia CA, but lived all my years in Lindsay. I come from a family of five. I have a brother who’s 11 years his name is Cesar, and I have a sister whose name is Maryan she’s the small one in my siblings, then there’s my dad whose name is also Cesar and finally my mom her name’s Alicia. My family culture comes from Mexico, we celebrate almost everything in the way mexicans do. My life has been full of ups and downs, just the way friends come and go, I use to have a best friend but highschool changes people and that’s what it did to me. I started caring more about, I started to understand the words of my parents “work hard mija, you need to study”.
Ever since I remember my family has always had issues financially with the households. But we’ve managed to go through these struggles, my parents have taught me how to work in the fields and to see the world in a different perspective that they don’t want me to take. All those days that they’ve taken me to work is to show me much how hard it is to earn the money in that type of job. Given the opportunity to study, an opportunity that wasn’t given to my parents makes me understand how important my future is based on going to college. I want to make my parents proud, and being the oldest one of my siblings motivates me more to make them proud and be role model for them.
In High school I’ve found my passion and that’s soccer. I’ve been involved in it since sophomore year. Currently I’m a senior and I’m looking forward to keep playing this year. I’m involved in various things one of them is National Spanish Honors Society, I’ve been a member since junior year because that’s when I took AP Spanish Language and now I’m taking AP Spanish Literature. Something else I’m involved in is CSF it’s where you manage to pass all your classes each semester for four semesters. Clubs I’ve joined have been My Voce Club and Key Club for two years now, in Key Club its purpose is to obtain community hours, while in My Voice Club we stand up for the abuse to women. We do really fun activities that represent women and one of them is the Walk in her shoes is where we lead the school guys to walk a mile in heels. Another club I was a member of was ASL in where we also learn sign language and gain community hours. Something else that has marked my life throughout high school has been AVID. As an AVID student I have always tried to influence others to try to do better in everything they do. My first year, as a freshman at Lindsay High School it was tough to stand up for others because now in days you get judged by anything, but I still did I stood up for others in my classes. I never left without showing those who were interested on how I took notes, being more specific cornell notes. I always thought showing others the way you take notes is great because what if that might just be their way of taking notes too. As an AVID member being on task is one of your main roles and that’s what I’ve done throughout the years. I know how to work with others because I always try to take leadership by listening to others opinions, I could take leadership as one of the main roles I’ve experienced in these 4 years of High School. Leadership will always guide me to success that’s forsure.
My whole life I’ve been waiting for the moment to graduate from high school to start this new chapter of going to college. All those stressful night will finally pay off but receiving part of this local scholarship would be of great help, even more because my family doesn’t have the complete money to support me in college. Something that I believe sets me apart from other candidates applying to this scholarship is that I’m a hardworker. People could just say this but I could prove it. I’ve managed to keep my gpa on an average of a 3.5 while playing sports. Taking some time to do a level 4 work for a class when you have soccer practice after school is not easy. It’s tough, because it takes more than class time it takes thinking, it takes the time for me to sit there and review the work over and over again. I have found my methods to study and that’s a great step because that’s really what I’ll be doing most of the time at a university, studying. I have the mindset to do the work at college, I feel like I’m ready. It’s really not about how smart you are or how fast you could understand things but about how much effort you will put in, to learn it, and that’s what I have enough effort to do what it takes to achieve my goals. I deserve this scholarship I will pay it off by succeeding in college .
